Pronoun: Subject and Possessive Adjectives

Perhatikan kalimat dibawah ini:
F My mother’s name is Lisa. She is a housewife.

Pronoun ‘Subject’
Kata ‘she’ pada kalimat kedua muncul untuk menggantikan ‘my mother’pada kalimat pertama. Karena itu, ‘she’ disebut ‘Pronoun’ (kata ganti). Terdapat 7 macam ‘Pronoun’ dalam bahasa Inggris: I, you, we, they, he, she, it.

I, you, we, they, he, she, it adalah bentuk ‘pronoun’ yang berfungsi sebagai ‘Subject’ dalam kalimat. Perhatikan kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • I am a student.
  • You are my friend.
  • We are classmates.
  • They are teachers.
  • He is an English teacher.
  • She is a headmaster.
  • It is our class.
Possessive Adjective

Perhatikan kembali kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • My phone number is 085223658963.
  • Her phone number is 0853698265.
‘My’ dan ‘her’ adalah bentuk ‘possessive adjective’ dari ‘I’ dan ‘she’. ‘possessive adjective’ digunakan untuk menyatakan kata ganti milik. Untuk lebih jelasnya, perhatikan penggunaan ‘possessive adjective’ pada kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • I have a phone. My phone number is 085223658963.
  • You have a phone. Your phone number is 085223658963.
  • We have a phone. Our phone number is 085223658963.
  • They have a phone. Their phone number is 085223658963.
  • He has a phone. His phone number is 085223658963.
  • She has a phone. Her phone number is 0853698265.
  • It has a phone number. Its phone number is 085223658963.
English Pronoun

Pronoun + To be

Perhatikan kembali kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • I’m a student.
  • She’s a housewife.
Pada saat dalam kalimat ada to be (am, is, are, were, was), I berpasangan dengan am, sementara she berpasangan dengan is. Berikut adalah pola pasangan Pronoun + to be:

Dalam bentuk present tense
Dalam bentuk past tense
I am...
You are...
We are...
They are...
He is...
She is...
It is...
I was...
You were...
We were...
They were...
He was...
She was...
It was...

Pronoun + Verb
Perhatikan kembali kalimat-kalimat berikut:
  • I live in Pameungpeuk.
  • She lives in Pameungpeuk.
Berbeda dengan kalimat sebelumnya, dua kalimat di atas tidak menggunakan to be. To be tidak perlu digunakan jika dalam kalimat sudah terdapat kata kerja. Kata ‘live’ adalah kata kerja (verb), jadi pada kalimat di atas tidak perlu menggunakan to be.

Perhatikan bahwa kata ‘live’ yang mengikuti kata ‘she’ berubah menjadi ‘lives’. Ada penambahan ‘s’ pada kata tersebut. ‘Come’ adalah kata kerja (verb) bentuk pertama (present form), dan jika kata kerja bentuk pertama mengikuti pronoun ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘it’, kata kerja tersebut harus ditambah ‘s’ atau ‘es’. Perhatikan kalimat-kalimat di bawah ini:
  • I like watching television. I watch television every day.
  • You like watching television. You watch television every day.
  • We like watching television. We watch television every day.
  • They like watching television. They watch television every day.
